Abraham Maslow

Psychologist

Abraham Maslow

Abraham Harold Maslow, the psychologist responsible for designing the best-known pyramid after those of Egypt, was born in 1908 in the USA. The son of Russian immigrants, he chose to study the human mind, probably to better understand the complexity of life.

Instead of focusing on traumas and difficulties (hello, Freud!), Maslow chose to focus on the positive side of things, thus establishing the hierarchy of needs. This structure basically works as a manual for climbing out of the hole and achieving ‘self-actualisation’ - that phase where, theoretically, we become our best version (or at least that's what we pay a coach for).

He revolutionised humanistic psychology and died in 1970, leaving a legacy that is still used today to explain everything from motivation at work to why we can't get our hands off our mobile phones.
