Angela Davis

Professor, Philosopher, Writer, Socialist Activist, and Anti-Racist Feminist

Angela Davis is living proof that philosophy, political struggle, and iconic hair can—and should—go hand in hand. Born in 1944 in segregated Alabama, she grew up surrounded by racism and resistance. She is one of the sharpest intellectuals of the 20th century.

The daughter of teachers and activists, Davis immersed herself in philosophy and Marxism, studying with giants such as Herbert Marcuse. She became an international symbol of the civil rights struggle, especially after being arrested in the 1970s, unjustly accused of involvement in a kidnapping, acquitted, and emerging stronger than ever.

A teacher, writer, and anti-racist feminist activist, she remains an uncomfortable reference point for conservatives and a shining beacon for those who believe that the world can — and must — be more just.
