Carol Dweck

Psychologist

Carol Dweck is the psychologist who basically became the mental coach of an entire generation that learned that making mistakes is part of life — as long as you don't give up at the first hurdle. Born in 1946 in the United States, she attended universities such as Columbia and Stanford, where she developed her most famous idea: the theory of mindsets.

According to her, you can have a fixed mindset (the ‘this is who I am’ type) or a growth mindset (the ‘I can improve, just give me some time’ type). With her bestseller Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, she became a darling of educators, leaders and even coaches, although she probably turns her nose up at the ‘Nutella motivational’ approach that some have given her theory. Deep down, Carol just wants us to stop sabotaging ourselves and start believing in the power of ‘not yet.’
