Guy Debord

Theorist, Philosopher, Filmmaker, and Labour Critic

Guy Debord was the guy who looked at modern society and said, ‘This has become a big show — and everyone is hypnotised.’ Born in 1931, Debord was the mastermind behind the Situationist International, a group that mixed art, politics, and a generous dash of creative chaos.

His most famous book, The Society of the Spectacle, is practically a slap in the face to the culture of images, consumption and alienation. Published in 1967 — long before social media existed — it predicted the fake life feed. A staunch anti-capitalist, he also made experimental films that defied narrative logic and boredom, because for him even cinema had to be provocative. He died in 1994, leaving behind a legacy that remains relevant and uncomfortable: a (not so subtle) invitation to turn off the screen and face reality without filters.
