Søren Kierkegaard

Philosopher, Theologian, Poet and Social Critic

Søren Kierkegaard was the Danish philosopher who put existential angst on the map — and did so with style, irony and an elegant wardrobe (yes, he was quite vain).

Born in 1813 in Copenhagen, he lived a life marked by internal dilemmas, unresolved passions (such as his famous breakup with Regine Olsen) and a Christian faith that he treated with more depth than many theologians. Considered the father of existentialism, he wrote his works always exploring the tensions between freedom, choice, faith and that uncomfortable emptiness that strikes at three in the morning.

A fierce critic of the institutional church and ‘salon’ philosophy, Kierkegaard preferred to prod the reader with questions that no one wanted to hear. He died young, at the age of 42, leaving a legacy that still makes anyone think twice before saying they have their life under control.
